WHAT WE DO — current projects
“Those who dance are often thought mad by those who cannot hear the music.”
— Tao Te Ching
Why do we make art? The answer to that question is probably as diverse as are the artists who make the art. Many artists create art because they enjoy the process; it’s fun making things! Others create art in an effort to connect with other people. They have a story to tell or an experience to talk about. They are speaking in the language of their own art, be it in words, images, actions, dance — it’s a way of recording beauty, or power, or terror — maybe you need to have empathy to create art. Whatever the reason, every artist feels an inner compulsion to create and to share that which they have created. Perhaps we’re all just like cavemen sitting around a fire, telling stories, each in our own medium, in our own way.
Come join us! These are our recent and current projects:
- Readers’ Theatre
Readers’ Theater is an integrated approach to involving community in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in a social atmosphere. It requires no sets, costumes, props, or memorized lines. Instead of acting out literature as in a play, the performer’s goal is to read aloud effectively, enabling the audience to visualize the action. Performers bring the text alive by using voice, facial expressions, and sometimes gestures. Come join us→ there is no charge.
- The Writers’ Nook
The Third House in collaboration with The Okanagan Regional Library founded a new writers’ group that met twice monthly. We called it the Writers’ Nook. With the onslaught of covid, the meetings moved online via zoom technology, but now it’s back, personal and alive in the library! Do you like to write? Come join us→ there is no charge.
- The Shuswap Nature Hiker
Exercise, fun, camaraderie and best of all, hanging out with Mother Nature in the great outdoors! Everything we need to keep our minds and bodies healthy, agile and fit. We hike every Friday, regardless of the weather. Come join us→ there is no charge.
- The Arts OnSite with Lady Nature
Do you write, read, paint, dance, play in theatre, draw, compose music or pursue any other creative passion in the arts? If you do, then you are invited to join in and participate in The Arts OnSite with Lady Nature. When warm weather returns we will meet at the library and carpool to a preselected outdoor space→ to spend the day creating and enjoying nature. If our plein air art plans are spoiled by inclement weather, we will meet the following week.
- Isolation art
This space was dedicated to the arts community to share work that they created during the period of isolation that affected all of us during covid-19. As we are no longer being affected as severely, we are no longer accepting submissions but if you would like to read and view the artwork that was produced during that time, we trust you will enjoy your visit; come visit the gallery→. The copyright© to all work in the gallery belongs to its creator. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us here.
- A Christmas Carol
This project, which resulted in an abridged version of Charles Dickens’, A Christmas Carol, was destined to be presented as a Readers’ Theatre Play in local halls. It was to bring the pleasure of hearing a Christmas ghost story, well told, and the opportunity to share the joy of the season with friends and neighbours—until covid reared its ugly head. It is still on a shelf, but it’ll be back.
- Ida and Old Baldy’s Seniors’ Theatre
The most fun you can have in two hours — standing up or sitting down! No experience necessary. Come join us! You are never too late for Seniors’ Theatre.
