WHAT WE DO — current projects — the writers’ nook

“Get it down. Take chances. It may be bad, but it’s the only way you can do anything really good.”
— William Faulkner

The Writers’ Nook

The Writers’ Nook is back! This group is for anybody who writes, whether you’re writing your own personal journals, your memoirs, a novel, or writing essays, scientific reports, and engaging yourself in technical writing. No matter what kind of writing you do, writing is serious business. You need focus. You never stop reading, learning, reflecting — being serious! And this is where associating with your peers comes in.

Our meetings are theme-based, informative and interactive. Work is shared, reviewed and discussed. Constructive feedback is provided by the other members, if you want it. The goal is to provide a safe and positive environment in which we can improve our writing skills. Membership is open; all writers are welcome and there’s no charge.

If you are interested in learning more about the types of writing themes we discuss at our meetings, take a look at some that have gone before; some that we may visit again. Visit The Writer’s Nook blog; it’s a tool we use, a working blog.

Do you write? When we write, as with all the arts, we are simply responding to an inner urge — our senses are sharp, alive, resonating with the excitement of creating this thing we’re working on. We write because the creative juices are flowing; maybe we have a story to tell. Maybe we want to make a name for ourselves or change the world. Sometimes, we write simply to discover meaning in the world around us. Our reasons for writing are as varied as those of us doing the writing. Regardless of what your reason is — would you like to join our writers’ group? We encourage you to come find us; join us.

Why join? Most importantly, the greatest benefit we get comes from putting our work in front of other people. As writers, we tend to be shy and withdrawn about our writing, and asking other writers to read and critique it can be terrifying at first. But feedback is valuable. It pushes you to see your work from an outside perspective. This is a huge key to development. And using your own knowledge to provide that outside perspective for someone else sharpens your own eyes. A writer’s group is a safe place to sound out your ideas, find support and support your peers.

The Writer’s Nook met through zoom technology during covid; and when the covid fear passed, we took a break. We were still busy writing poetry, stories and novels; but now we feel maybe it’s time to start up again, hold our meetings in person. Contact us if you’re interested in joining; or just show up to one of our meetings.

Beginning on September 10th 2024 we will meet regularly from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at:
The Okanagan Regional Library, South Shuswap Location
#1 - 2425 Golf Course Drive
Blind Bay, BC. V0E 1H2
(250) 675-4818
