New Year’s in October
MY RESOLUTION is to get serious about my writing, to stop procrastinating and get down to business. Summer’s over, autumn is here, it’s the beginning of a new writing season — so why am I not hunkering down and getting some writing done?
RENEWING MY COMMITMENT TO WRITE
How and where can I find the inspiration to write again? Here are some quotations from fellow Canadian authors — see the Handout sent to you by email. Please read it and bring your own comments AND your own favourite quotations to the meeting.
Your Challenge
Your challenge before our next meeting on October 19th is to:
- Find a quote that has special meaning to you and post it somewhere where you will be sure to see it often.
- Write a story, poem or essay about the time that you put your hand near your ear and the ring on your finger started talking to you; OR
About the day you found yourself holding a single brick plucked out of a brick wall; OR
Any topic of your choice.

A Brick in the Wall by Phillis
Who’s Talking by Kevin
Phillis, that’s an excellent quote. I like your poem’s symbology, and wondered what someone might do with that prompt. (I also wondered where that brick came from–ouch!)
Hi Joyce. Your second short quote suits me perfectly 🤣
Thanks for your feedback Kevin. I enjoyed the way your story came full circle. Interesting concept of how the message came through and the effort of getting into a pickup truck at my age feels exactly like your description 😂 Great writing 👍
Phillis: I loved your poem. I really enjoy how you have the ability to say soooo much, in so few words. I think that’s the beauty of poetry that sometimes you don’t have to spell out what you’re trying to say, it’s just a feeling, that almost can’t be expressed in mere words. We’ll done.
Kevin: Who’s Talking is a really interesting piece, even a little spooky in places. Other places, very atmospheric and creates a distinct mood. I really liked the feelings created by your second sentence though it’s very long. I feel it could use a little work to separate some of the ideas, and bring together some other fragments of the sentence. The ring glowed as it spoke, I liked that but felt shock when you threw it away. I feel you should put this story away and use it sometime, or let it be the inspiration for another time.
