The Writers’ Nook is a place where we, as a group, can provide a safe and positive environment in which to encourage one another and hone our own writing skills.

The Dead Metaphor

Metaphors describe people, objects or places. They’re used to encourage the reader to draw a comparison between two seemingly unrelated things, and find similarities between them, much like using a similie. Are they are necessary? No. But they enliven ordinary language. They allow you to write about feelings, thoughts, things, and experiences for which there are no easy words. But remember, if you aren’t making up your own metaphors, you’re probably using someone else’s — or worse — you might be using a dead metaphor.

THE CHALLENGE
to be submitted before the next meeting on February 2nd

Take a piece of your own writing from some time ago and rewrite it. Give consideration to our discussion at this meeting as well as our discussion on January 5th about the use of adverbs and adjectives, and edit your original piece to make it better. Submit both versions.

OR

Write a story, verse or essay using one of the following writing prompts, and paying particular attention to adverbs, adjectives and metaphors:

  • Hidden away on the inside of my jacket —
  • Out of the blue, I heard footsteps in the empty, dark street.
