November 12

The Writers’ Nook is a place where we, as a group, can provide a safe and positive environment in which to encourage one another and hone our own writing skills.

Our Theme for this meeting is Character Development, including their Backstory. Download the handout for this meeting, which includes examples provided at the meeting as well as The Challenge for next week. Please send me a pdf copy of your submission as soon as you can so I can post it for the next meeting.

Our challenge was to develop and prepare an interesting character to reveal to a reader, to provide to the reader their their First Impression of this character. To accomplish it we were asked to look online or in a magazine to find an image of an interesting-looking character. Cut it out, or print it out so we have it handy to look at, for inspiration as we write. Write a first impression physical description of this character. Then briefly write about his/her character (a non-physical description).

Using these descriptions, we were to make up a “backstory” for them. The backstory will tell us something about this character’s history, something that makes him/her act and react the way they do. (Keep the picture for future reference, so you can use it for future meetings.

Some of our members may prefer to share some of their other work instead, that’s okay too.

PREVIOUS MEETING: October 22

Our challenge for this meeting was to develop and write a description of an interesting introduction to a character. Also, include a BACKSTORY for this character. Alternatively, find a description of a character that you’ve enjoyed reading in a book and share it with us. Use your imagination to create a BACKSTORY for them and send it along.
ALTERNATIVELY send in anything that you’ve written and would like to share with the group.
