October 22

The Writers’ Nook is a place where we, as a group, can provide a safe and positive environment in which to encourage one another and hone our own writing skills.

The Theme for this meeting is, Character Development, with regards to First Impressions. Click here to read the handout.

The challenge based on this handout is to look online or in a magazine to find an image of an interesting-looking character. Cut it out, or print it out so you have it handy to look at as you write. Using the information presented in the handout, write a first impression physical description of this character. Then briefly write about his/her character (a non-physical description).

Using these descriptions that you have written, make up a “backstory” for them. That should tell us what it is in this character’s history that makes him/her this way? (Keep the picture for future reference, so you can use it for future meetings.)

If you prefer to share some of your other work instead, that’s okay too. We look forward to reading it.

Please send the pdf file of your work to me by Tuesday, November 5th so our Nook friends can read it and prepare to comment. Include your name on the pdf and if you wish, also your contact information. If you don’t know my email address, just contact me here.

PREVIOUS MEETING: October 8th

Our Theme for this meeting was What is the Difference between Story and Plot, and does it really matter?

Our Challenge is to write the Plot for a Story which is about, “A protagonist who leaves their everyday life to do something important.” If you are confused, you’re not the only one. A Plot is basically what we normally refer to as “the whole story.” Alternatively, feel free to send anything else that you have written and would like to share with us.

Responses to the Challenge as follows:

Changing Lives by Ernie Briginshaw

That Which is Truly Important by Joyce Adrian Sotski

The Crone by Twyla Armstrong

Leaving by Andrew Armstrong

Firestorm by Shirley DeKelver

Marvin by Dulcie Enns

The book that we plan to discuss at our book club meeting in December is, Medicine Walk by Richard Waganese. You can borrow a copy from the library, buy a used copy at a second hand bookstore, or borrow a copy from a friend.
