She was a calico
cat, I mean
beautiful
white fur as soft as
the down on a baby chick
patches of orange as
bright as a pumpkin
with black as strong as
the mane on a horse
tho slick and smooth like
feathers on fowl and
shiny beyond belief
She had spunk
hissing
spitting
at every animal
that came near
frightened of everything
that crossed her shadow
but daring always
to cross in front
of the enemy
with grace
and careful
stepping
She had humour
strolling the piano keys
at night when all
in the house
were sleeping
dragging socks from
dresser drawers
and dropping them
splatt! …
the splash
of water in the
dog’s dish
Now there’s a gentle little
soul that’s missing from our house
a quiet presence that’s left
a lonely hole in my heart
She didn’t want to go but
she’s gone now to
a better place
