General Notes

Nick Themelis,
born Apr 10, 1945

Nick's father's name was George Themelis. He was born in Alatsata, Turkey in 1908. His mother, Kiriakoula Vasilakis, was born in Reisdere, Turkey in 1910.

Between 1918 and 1921, the Turkish and Greek governments agreed to relocate their citizens to the countries of their origins. Since both of his parents' ancestors were Greek, both families were relocated to Crete, Greece during this period of time.

They were married in Ierapetra and had four sons. Their first son, Nick was born approximately 1933, John was born in 1937, Markos was born in 1940, and (the second) Nick on Dec 21, 1945. Near the end of January or early February 1946, Nick found a hand grenade that was left from WWII. The grenade exploded, killing Nick and injuring John and Markos. In Greece funerals happen within 24 hours of the death, and children are given their legal names when they are baptized. The funeral and the baptism happened the same day, and the baby was named Nick after his older brother.

This baby eventually immigrated to Canada in November 1969 and married Lorna in 1993.
